Why is NIS2 Actually important?

Quote from the CEO

"NIS2 isn't just paperwork. It's a call to rethink how we approach security, across people, systems, and policies. From mandatory incident reporting and risk assessments to MFA, supply chain controls, and security training, it's real work. But done right, it builds resilience that pays off long before you're tested."

Covered Sectors: NIS1 vs NIS2

The NIS2 directive covers a broader range of sectors by including areas such as chemicals, food, and waste management.

What Is the NIS2 Directive?

NIS stands for Network and Information Security. It's an EU directive that sets out rules to strengthen cybersecurity across the Union, especially for critical infrastructure, and to create a more unified regulatory landscape. The first version, NIS1, was introduced in 2016 as the EU's first major cybersecurity law. It was a key milestone, but much has changed since.

With rapid digitalization and a significant rise in cyber threats, the landscape has evolved. In response, NIS2 was finalized in 2022. As the successor to NIS1, NIS2 broadens the scope, covering more sectors and introducing stricter requirements to address today's more complex digital risks.

Who Is Affected?

NIS2 applies to a wide range of organizations that play a vital role in society and the economy. This includes both essential and important entities in sectors like:

  • Energy, Transport, and Banking
  • Healthcare, Digital Infrastructure, and Water Supply
  • Public Administration, Waste Management, Food Production, and more

Even if your company isn't directly named, you may fall under the directive if you provide critical services to one that is. The bar is higher, and the scope broader, than NIS1. Now, suppliers, partners, and service providers are also on the hook.
